Everything about
Basketball

A fast-paced team sport played worldwide. Learn the rules, explore the history, and discover the players and teams that shaped the game.

The Basics

How the Game Works

Basketball is played between two teams of five players each. The objective is simple: score more points than your opponent by shooting the ball through the opposing team's basket.

A standard game consists of four quarters. The team with the most points at the end of regulation wins. If tied, overtime periods are played until a winner is determined.

The Court

NBA courts are 94 ft long and 50 ft wide. Key zones include the three-point arc (23.75 ft from the basket), the paint (key area), and the half-court line.

Scoring

Field goals inside the arc score 2 points. Shots from beyond the arc score 3 points. Free throws, awarded after fouls, are worth 1 point each.

Quarters

NBA games have four 12-minute quarters. FIBA (international) games use 10-minute quarters. The shot clock limits offense to 24 seconds per possession.

Positions

The five positions are Point Guard (1), Shooting Guard (2), Small Forward (3), Power Forward (4), and Center (5). Each has a distinct role on offense and defense.

Common Fouls

Players may not push, hold, or impede opponents illegally. After 5 personal fouls (6 in NBA), a player fouls out. Teams enter the bonus after opponent fouls accumulate.

Violations

Key violations include traveling (moving without dribbling), double-dribbling (dribbling with both hands), and goaltending (blocking a shot on its downward arc).

History

From Peach Baskets to Global Sport

Basketball was invented in 1891 by a single person and grew into one of the most-watched sports on the planet in just over a century.

1891

Invention by James Naismith

Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor, invented basketball at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. He nailed two peach baskets to a 10-foot elevated track and wrote 13 basic rules.

1936

Olympic Debut

Basketball made its debut as an official Olympic sport at the 1936 Berlin Games. The United States won the gold medal, a dominance they would maintain for decades. James Naismith was present to witness the moment.

1946

NBA Founded

The Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded in 1946 and merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to form the National Basketball Association (NBA), now the premier professional league worldwide.

1979

The Three-Point Line

The NBA adopted the three-point line in 1979, revolutionizing offensive strategy. Initially considered a gimmick, it became one of the most transformative rules in basketball history.

1992

The Dream Team

The 1992 US Olympic team, featuring NBA stars like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, was the first to include professional players. They won gold and popularized the sport globally like never before.

2010s

The Analytics Revolution

Advanced statistics transformed how teams evaluate players and build rosters. The three-point shot became central to modern offense, with the Golden State Warriors dynasty epitomizing this new style of play.
